Tips From An Occupational Therapist

Tips for SPD Children

We would love to give you individual tips you could use for your students or your children! However to do so, we would need to be an Occupational Therapist (O.T.) who has done a sensory profile and evaluation of the individual needs of your child.

Until you are seen by an O.T. to determine the individual ‘sensory buffet’ your child needs, you might want to check out the following web sites. Each of them provides some incredible resources and books that you can refer to for further information on tips and strategies to try with your child.

Books

  • Out of Sync Child Has Fun, by Carol Kranowitz
  • 101 Activities for Kids in Tight Spaces, by Carol Kranowitz
  • Building Bridges, by Ellen Yack B.Sc., M.Ed., O.T. , Paula Aquilla B.Sc., O.T, and Shirley Sutton B.Sc., O.T.
  • Sensory Integration and The Child, by  Jean Ayres
  • Smart Moves, by Dr.Carla Hannaford

There are many incredible books out there and we will eventually have a book site on our web site. For now, we wanted to keep this list simple and easy for parents and/or teachers to come to as a starting point.

For all you amazing authors...bear with us, we will promote your great books soon!  For parents, teachers, and caregivers working with children with sensory issues, the books and websites listed above will give you a starting place until the child has been seen by an O.T. or P.T. to have a professional sensory profile done.

Hoping this brings you an easy step to getting you going!
