Happy Fall!

Hello everyone! Fall is such a wonderful time of year for great walks and the crispy crunchy sound of leaves as our children rustle through them. I love this time of year as it gives our children a wonderful time to be out in the fresh air walking through beautiful forests with vibrant rainbows of colours. Our children today often miss nature, and it is so critical they have more opportunities to be away from televisions and out enjoying nature.

We are hoping that the transition to ‘back to school’ is going well for all of you with children with SPD. Unlike other children who have that first awkward period, our children go into distress. From my own experience, and from parents I have spoken with, the trauma we carry while our children are in crisis is more than I wish for my enemies to bear. To be a parent, and at the mercy of the schools who do not have enough information on this disorder, is more that our children should suffer and more than anyone should experience.

It is imperative that education be the number one strategy in getting help for our children. At SPD Canada, we are extremely proud to present our first workshop in Edmonton, Alberta on Saturday, October 24. More information on this workshop is here, including a PDF poster you can download and distribute. We are proud to have professionals speak on SPD and allow both professionals and parents time to share and build strategies and tips together. Our board is extremely excited!

You might also be interested in the e-learning course Dr. Lucy Miller has on her website www.spdfoundation.net. This is a course you can do at your convenience, and she provides top research information into this disorder.

October is National Sensory Awareness month, originally started thanks to Kathleen Morris and her team at www.sifocus.com.  Kathleen has done so much to provide professional information through her magazine and I highly recommend this magazine for both parents and professionals.

We have been hearing more from you these days, and thank you for your feedback. We are always eager to know how we can improve and at the same time know what it is we are doing right. We are a small team on a very limited budget but will do all we can to help.

Wishing you a wonderful autumn,
Lori
